Distance in sparring

In all sports, the correct position is 50% of success.

distance in battle

Distance in martial arts affects the force of the blow and the variety of types of blows. So at close range, elbows, knees, etc. are used. While at long range, kicks and punches are more applicable.

If you choose the wrong distance and throw the wrong blow, there is a high probability of injury. In addition, you will not be able to cause the damage that you would if you were in the right position.

Tall opponents are better off using ranged tactics and keeping the enemy at a distance. Low – vice versa.

You can also deliberately change the distance. Thus creating uncomfortable conditions for the enemy and imposing your strategy.

A sharp reduction in distance is used during an attack, to suppress an attack and in counterattacks with short blows. This is often used in wing chun and styles with throws and bends.

Sometimes, experienced fighters, when defending, make a sharp retreat back or to the side, and then carry out a counterattack.

It is best to practice the distance on a punching bag or boxing paws. It will be useful to train it in pairs, when developing the technique. This way you can adjust the best position for a particular blow. If you understand that you are not able to do it yourself, contact a professional.

punching distance

For direct blows, the arm must be fully straightened after application. When kicking, this rule always applies. The exception to these rules are knees and elbows (for obvious reasons). You should strain your arm or leg only a split second before touching the target. Otherwise, you will reduce the speed and force of the impact. In addition, you will get tired faster.

Pay attention to the sketches. It shows how to correctly deliver straight blows. If placed correctly, the blow will be fast, strong, more biting and you will avoid injury.

The video provides a good overview of the different distances and how to work in them:

Remember – the feeling of distance comes with experience. If it doesn’t work out right away, don’t get upset and keep practicing.

Successful training!
